Starting situation
Embossing stamps in a tool repeatedly break at the thread and need replacing. This ties up maintenance personnel and interrupts the production process. There is also the risk of a broken stamp getting into the tool during the pressing process and causing major damage. The failures are caused by lateral forces on the stamps which were not considered when designing the tool. Modifying the tool to avoid the lateral forces would be very expensive and time extensive. Therefore, we want to reinforce the embossing stamps.
Procedure
Once again, Picum can cover the whole project. In the first step, we design reinforced embossing stamps and adapt the design of the corresponding seats in the tool. The type of load case is unknown. Experimental analyses or simulations would be time-consuming and expensive. We therefore proceeded according to the motto "a lot helps a lot". We have reinforced the thread of the embossing stamp from M6 to M10. In addition, the stamp is fitted into the tool with a very small clearance. This means that the collar of the stamp touches the wall of the tool directly and lateral forces are absorbed by it and no longer by the thread (see diagram on the right). This way, the resulting forces on the holding seat of the stamp are lower due to the reduced lever arm to the force application point at the top of the stamp. In addition, the diameter of the stamp collar has been increased from 10 mm to 15 mm. The design of the embossing stamps now resembles fitting screws. Thanks to our network of manufacturing partners, we can supply the customer with hardened embossing stamps. We adapt the tool to the new embossing stamps with picum-Bart directly on site at the customer's premises, so that we can avoid transportation of the heavy tool. We had to increase the threaded hole by milling. Milling chips accumulate then in the hole which can influence the process negatively. However, removing the chips was no problem thanks to our freely adjustable process air with which the chips were blown out of the hole. Finally, our toolmakers correctly adjusted the stamping dies with shims on the try-out press
Advantages
Thanks to our versatile team, we were able to handle the entire project. The customer did not have to worry about the design of the changes or the procurement of new parts. We were also able to carry out all the work on site with our mobile machining systems and our experienced toolmakers.
